Surrey hoops teams hit court for opening rounds of RCMP Classic

Junior, senior boys squads from across city vie for local bragging rights

The opening rounds of the Surrey RCMP Classic have wrapped up, and the field has narrowed as the tournament approaches its final rounds on Friday and Saturday.

The all-Surrey event – which features more than 650 junior and senior boys, playing at gyms across the city – began Sunday with a play-in rounds, of sorts; 24 teams took the court in winner-takes-all contests while a handful of other teams were awarded byes into Tuesday’s official first round.

Sunday’s winners were Princess Margaret, which beat Kwantlen Park 52-42; Queen Elizabeth,which edged Regent Christian 69-64; and Johnston Heights, which narrowly beat Earl Marriott 79-77 to advance. North Surrey also defeated Fraser Heights 72-63, Enver Creek beat Elgin Park 58-38, Surrey Christian beat Panorama Ridge 113-51, Sullivan Heights advanced with an 80-24 win over White Rock Christian Academy and L.A Matheson beat the Frank Hurt Hornets 58-54.

On Tuesday, the Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers – the No. 1-ranked senior boys quad-A team in B.C. – easily advanced with a lopsided win over Princess Margaret; Southridge beat L.A. Matheson 79-56; Guildford Park beat Surrey Christian 91-50 and Fleetwood Park also moved on to the next round with a 78-50 victory over North Surrey.

Elsewhere, the Tamanawis Wildcats – currently the province’s No. 7 quad-A team – cruised by Queen Elizabeth, and Pacific Academy beat Enver Creek 79-68. The final two games of the day saw Clayton Heights defeat Sullivan Heights 62-42 to move into the next round, and the tournament’s two-time defending champions from Semiahmoo beat Johnston Heights 96-68.

The tournament continues throughout the week, with semifinals set for Friday night at Enver Creek Secondary and the championship game scheduled for Saturday, 7:45 p.m., also at Enver Creek.

In the tournament’s junior division, Johnston Heights, Earl Marriott, Frank Hurt and Princess Margaret all advanced through Sunday’s games. By the end of Tuesday’s action, teams left in the hunt for a championship were Fleetwood Park, Semiahmoo, L.A. Matheson, Princess Margaret, Tamanawis, Panorama Ridge, Queen Elizabeth and Elgin Park.

The junior boys championship game is set for Enver Creek on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
