Warm weather seems to suit South Surrey’s Adam Svensson.

Nearly one year after he won his first-ever Web.com Tour golf tournament – the Great Abaco Open – in the Bahamas, the 25-year-old pro golfer made waves on the PGA Tour, flirting with the top of the leaderboard at the Sony Open in Hawaii last weekend before ultimately finishing 43rd.

The PGA Tour rookie – Svensson earned his PGA card back in August after placing in the top-25 on the Web.com Tour money list – carded a four-round score of seven-under par at the Sony Open, which was held at the par-70 Wai’alae Country Club in Honolulu last weekend.

And while he eventually dropped down the leaderboard as the Tour’s top players made a run for first place – including eventual champion Matt Kuchar, who finished 22-under par – Svensson found himself alone atop the leaderboard after the first round, after shooting a blistering nine-under par.

“It was all a blur,” Svensson told the Associated Press after finishing his opening round Thursday. “I don’t even remember which holes I birdied.”

In addition to his birdies, Svensson also had an eagle – on the par-five ninth hole, when his six-iron shot rolled to within five feet of the cup. Other highlights of his first round included a 50-foot birdie putt on the 11th hole, an 18-foot birdie on No. 13 and a 10-footer he sunk for birdie one hole later.

His one-round score of 61 was the lowest round of his professional career, though he did shoot a 61 while at Florida’s Barry University before turning pro.

On Friday, Svensson carded a four-over score of 74. After making the cut for the weekend’s rounds, he shot an even-par 70 on Saturday and wrapped up his impressive tournament with a two-under 68 Sunday.
