Wave swimmers excel at Nanaimo masters meet

Despite travel issues, White Rock Wave club places sixth out of 20 teams at first meet of swim season.

The first meet of the BC Masters swim season went well for the White Rock Wave –though getting to and from the event was not without its problems.

The 20-team meet was in Nanaimo, and due to a ferry cancellation, the 11 Wave members missed the first four events. Then, their would-be return ferry was also canceled, forcing them to take an earlier sailing, which meant missing the meet’s final six competitions.

Nevertheless, the team still managed to finish sixth overall, with a number of swimmers placing on the podium.

Among the winners were Barb Mittermaier, 51, who was first in the 50-m freestyle, second in 50-m breaststroke and third in the 100-m free; Gary Weiss, 52, second in the 50-m butterfly; Nancy Waterman, 52, first in 100-m breast and second in the 200-m free; Craig Slater, 54, who was first in both the 50-m free and 200-m individual medley; and Teri York, 59, was won silver in three events – the 50-m and 100-m backstroke, and 100-m free, and bronze in the 50-m free.

Theo Manley, 59, also ended up on the podium, winning gold in the 200-m IM and 200-m free, while claiming silver in the 200-m back; Sharyan Richardson, 60, was first in the 50- and 100-m free and second in the 100-m breast; Andree Leduc, 61, was second in the 50- and 100-m free and third in the 50-m breast; Becky Willis, 66, won the 50-m free and was second in the 100-m free and 50-m breast; Alida Brichon took top spot in the 50- and 100-m breast events, and was second in the 50-m free; and Tony Pease, 75, rounded out the medal haul with first-place medals in the 50- and 200-m freestyle swims and a silver medal in the 100-m free.
