Saturday’s date had many Star Wars fans making endless puns and memes on social media, but it was also a day to pay tribute to our own, real-life heroes.

International Firefighters’ Day, held on May 4, honours firefighters for their bravery internationally and also, remembers and honours firefighters who have lost their lives during service.

“Today marks International Firefighters’ Day, a time when we honor and appreciate the brave firefighters in our community,” the City of White Rock posted on X.

“Their remarkable efforts to ensure our safety and their selfless service deserve our heartfelt gratitude. Thank you to the White Rock Fire Rescue team!”

The city’s social media account also reminded residents of a ‘Heat and Wildfire Smoke Safety’ presentation from Fraser Health on Saturday (May 11) at White Rock Library, 15342 Buena Vista Ave., from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., when temperatures are expected to reach 24 C.

Attendees will learn about how wildfire smoke can affect their health and how to stay safe during such conditions.
