Three Surrey students were among the top scholarship winners at the Langley Community Music School’s recent 25th annual music festival, recognizing an “exceptional calibre of musicianship.”

South Surrey violinist Sunny Chan and his sister, pianist Kitty Chan, along with Surrey pianist Frances Robinson were awarded scholarships as a result of their perfomances at the festival, held in February at the school.

The Chans won a combined total of $1,025 toward their studies, sharing the Iris Severide Memorial Award and Friends of LCMS Award for their performance of Beethoven’s Sonata in C Minor.

Sunny Chan – a finalist in the online competition for the 2011 YouTube Orchestra, and one of the youngest participants last year in the National Youth Orchestra – also won the Iris Preston Award for his first place performance in the senior violin class.

Robinson received $850 for her exceptional performances at the festival.

She took first place in the senior piano category, and also won the Chopin Award and the Matthew D. Johnston Memorial Award.

Festival adjudicators heard 143 students perform in this year’s festival, which took place Feb. 19,  and a total of 95 awards were presented to 72 students. Visit www.langleymusic.com for a list of all the scholarship and award recipients.
