Surrey firefighters battle blaze in vacant house Sunday

Fire extinguished quickly by crews

Firefighters were busy battling a fire Sunday afternoon (April 28) on Fraser Highway in Surrey.

Fire crews received a call about a residential houses fire in the 18900-block of Fraser Highway around 3 p.m.

“When they arrived they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from a single-storey home,” said Surrey Fire Service assistant chief of operations Greg McRobbie, who noted the house was vacant.

Crews were able to fight the fire from the exterior, but had to cut through the plywood that was covering the building, in some cases, to access the fire.

The westbound lanes of Fraser Highway were closed for a short time, to allow crews to safely work.

Approximately 18 firefighters attended the blaze, and extinguished it quickly.

“The cause is undetermined at this time. Investigators will be on scene tomorrow,” McRobbie said.
