The long history of Chinese Canadians in B.C. will be discussed in a seminar hosted by the Surrey Archives.

Guest speaker Sarah Ling will explore the rich history of the province’s Chinese immigrants and descendants.

“This exhibition recounts some of the unique journeys that are in Chinese Canadian history from the 18th Century to the present day,” said Ling. “From Chinese-Indigenous relations since 1788, to the multiple migration waves between Hong Kong and Vancouver, to 20th and 21st Century migrations from countries across the world, such as South Africa, Thailand, and Singapore, this introductory exhibition serves as a prelude for sharing the integral role and unique identities of Chinese diasporas in Canada.”

Ling, exhibition and program manager of the Chinese Canadian Museum, will give the free, one-hour virtual talk Oct. 12.

Her seminar will feature themes present in a new exhibition called “Odysseys and Migration” now showing at the Chinese Canadian Museum. Some of the themes the exhibit explores include how Chinese immigrants helped shape B.C. for several generations.

The online presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Archives encourages participants to be ready with questions, or to share their own stories, as the talk will be interactive.

The Archives require that participants pre-register by calling 604-501-5100, or by registering online. A registration link can be found by visiting Surrey Archives on Facebook under their handle Heritage Surrey, @HeritageSurreyBC.

The Chinese Canadian Museum has two locations: one in Vancouver at 51 East Pender Street, and one in Victoria at 10-14 Fan Tan Alley.
