CEO honoured

A former South Surrey woman who heads White Rock-based Atira Women’s Resource Society has been named one of the 20 most influential people in residential construction for 2011.

BC Homes Magazine, in co-operation with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC, described Janice Abbott as among “the most interesting and impactful leaders of recent challenging times.”

According to a news release, Abbott, who is chief executive officer of AWRS, was chosen for her involvement in developing a variety of innovative housing developments for disadvantaged women, including Surrey’s Maxxine Wright Community Health Centre. AWRS also operates South Surrey’s Ama House – for senior women escaping abusive relationships – and Durrant House, a transition home for women and children.
