Three years after being featured in Peace Arch News for inspiring his younger brother to speak out against bullying, 14-year-old Tyler Reid is receiving an outpouring of community support for his recently launched business.
Tyler, who has a moderate learning disability, told PAN in 2008 how he would often get picked on by classmates. The situation motivated younger brother Nicholas to write a speech about Tyler, which he read to Peace Arch Elementary students to show that he is a good person who deserves to be treated just like anyone else. The message resonated with many of those who bullied or excluded Tyler, with some offering apologies and ceasing the behaviour.
Now, Tyler is leaving his mark on the community yet again.
He is using his passion for wood collecting and preparing wood for fires to run his own business and help others.
Not only does Tyler’s Firewood Company collect, cut and sell firewood – with the help of Nicholas – but $2 from every $12 bundle sold is donated to Semiahmoo House Society, which supports individuals and families with a developmental disability.
The company’s services include removing unwanted and discarded wood from neighbourhoods and recycling it.
All firewood is hand-collected and cut, and biodegradable packaging is used.
The company offers free delivery in White Rock/South Surrey with a minimum order of three $12 firewood bundles, and there is no charge for the pickup of unwanted wood.
Since catching wind of Tyler’s business, people have been phoning to buy and donate wood, wagons and safety supplies.
Echo Power Equipment has offered protective gear for Tyler and Nicholas, and is arranging for the donation of an electric wood splitter, according to the boys’ father, Kevin Reid.
“It will be helpful because donations are many and sales are growing.”
