More than 200 people came down to Crescent Beach Sunday for the ninth annual national Hike 4 Hospice.

It was the first time the fundraiser was held at Blackie Spit Park, and attendance at the May 1 event more than doubled that of last year.

Participants chose between a one-, three- and five-kilometre walk to raise funds and awareness for White Rock South Surrey Hospice Society, which supports people facing advanced illness, grief and end of life.

“We had so many people show up without pre-registering,” society fundraising and community relations director Anita Colley said.

“It was ideal. I think we’ll probably use (the site) again.”

The event was also attended by Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg, White Rock Mayor Catherine Ferguson, Surrey Coun. Tom Gill and Miss White Rock Chloe Woodin.

The walk brought in more than $21,000 for the hospice society, Colley said.
