The self-isolation created by the health emergency has frayed human connections and reduced or eliminated occasions to rebuild social lives. This is especially true for older adults, 55+.

For many reasons, isolation is a particular risk for those of us in this age group; yet we know that a sense of belonging is vital to our health, well-being, and quality of life. Building connections supports an active, resilient life, throughout one’s senior years. Yet, forming new connections can seem daunting, particularly as we get older.

Whether it is membership in one of our two community gardens, joining an activity group like yoga or knitting, or attending a Lit Café, Alex House is intentional about offering opportunities for seniors and others to connect. There are a couple of special events coming up this month and next, as well, which I want to share with you.

It’s been three years since we were last able to celebrate Christmas Community Lunch at Alex House. The tradition of a holiday meal for our neighbours goes back over 30 years, inspiring connection in a spirit of hospitality and friendship. I’m so excited to be welcoming neighbours back to Camp Alex on Wednesday, Dec. 14, for a hot, home-cooked turkey dinner plus dessert, entertainment by local singer Christine Dibble, games, and a door prize! Cost is just $12 ($10 for Alex House members). Register at info@alexhouse.net or (604) 535-0015, payment at the door.

There’s something new happening as well. I’m delighted to announce that Alex House is starting a new program for older adults 55+, meant to make the experience of forming connections more enjoyable, relaxed, and accessible. Seniors Connect begins Wednesday, Jan. 18, 7-8:30 p.m., repeating every third Wednesday through June. Enjoy live music, games and activities, and wine and cheese at the beautiful, seaside Beecher Place, for the low price of $10. Whether you’re looking for a new friend, someone to enjoy an activity with, or just a chat, Seniors Connect is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive way to meet new people. Register at info@alexhouse.net or (604) 535-0015).

Speaking of new beginnings and new relationships, Alex House is proud to reveal our new logo! Our beloved stick figure has been retired for a new, vibrant design. Created by Ta7talíya-men Paisley Nahanee of Nahanee Creative, the new logo features a stylized sunset over Semiahmoo Bay, illuminating our diverse community. The logo sums up the guiding principle of the neighbourhood house movement: Neighbours partnering with neighbours to co-create an engaged and connected community.

We wish all our neighbours a peaceful and joyous holiday season. May we find it a time to strengthen old connections and take chances to form new ones!
