Exploring cyber safety

Parents and teachers are invited to hear expert advice on cyber safety during an evening presentation April 11 at Southridge School, 2656 160 St.

Rob Nickel – author of Staying Safe in a Wired World; A Parent’s Guide to Internet Safety – is to discuss online dangers facing children.

Highlights of the 7 p.m. presentation include the use of smart phones, Skype, Facebook, texting, sending photos via phones, online gambling, chat room behavior, child porn and sexual harassment issues.

Nickel worked undercover online for more than half of his 14-year career with Ontario Provincial Police. The former detective sergeant retired from the force’s child pornography section, and for two years was secretary of the Internet Specialists Group, a sub-comittee of the Interpol Crimes Against Children Specialists Group.

He has since appeared on hundreds of radio and TV shows, including Dr. Phil, CNBC’s the Big Idea and Good Day New York.

Tickets ($10) can be purchased online at www.southridge.bc.ca
