A very large local dance competition will return to a Cloverdale high school April 9.
Last year, more than 600 high schoolers descended upon Salish Secondary School for “Level Up,” a B.C. high school dance team competition. Organizers expect more than 700 kids to attend the competition this year.
“Level Up is a provincial dance team competition for B.C. secondary students created and hosted by Salish Secondary school,” Jenny-Lynn Jensen, a teacher and the head of the dance program at Salish Secondary, told the Cloverdale Reporter.
She said the competition is a non-profit, public-school event.
“(It’s) aimed at providing an opportunity for high school students to come together and compete at a high level, while creating community, showcasing their talents, and creating a memorable experience to last a lifetime,” Jensen added.
This year’s competition is attracting dancers from 21 different schools from across Surrey, the Lower Mainland (including Squamish), and Vancouver Island.
Teams compete in various categories in the contest with first-, second-, and third-place awards handed out for most events. A panel from Burnaby’s Studio North Dance Complex will do the judging this year.
“We have a number of showcases from Lower Mainland groups: Harbour Dance Centre, A3 District, Studio North, and Fusion Force,” Jensen noted.
According to the their website, Level Up aims to kindle passion for dance and engender a commitment to excellence in the student dancers.
“Level Up is dedicated to creating an unforgettable experience for both participants and teachers alike. Our mission is to provide a platform for high school dance teams of all skill levels to showcase their hard work and performance.”
This year’s event takes place April 9 at 3 p.m. in the Salish Secondary School gym. The event is already sold out.
