Man in motion

The City of White Rock will join in celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion World Tour.

Council last month gave unanimous support to the city hosting an End of the Day event on or around May 19, 2012, to mark the end of a nine-month national relay planned to get underway Aug. 24.

According to a staff report, End of the Day events are to provide an opportunity for communities to come together, recognize local difference-makers, raise awareness about accessibility, celebrate progress and inspire a new generation to take action. Participating “provides the City of White Rock with a unique opportunity to reflect, celebrate and be inspired to create positive change,” writes Sylvia Yee, the city’s acting director of leisure services.

Council supported Yee’s recommendations to direct staff to plan and organize promotional activities, and approved funding of $1,500 from the city’s contingency if necessary. Another $8,500 in funding will be considered in the 2012 financial plan, they agreed.

Ferguson described participating in the celebrations as “a great opportunity for this city, in a lot of different ways.”
