A group that formed to help men to get together and work on projects – while also socializing – is getting underway on the Semiahmoo Peninsula.

Men’s Shed, a social group that has been established in many communities across B.C. and around the world, is starting in White Rock.

“It’s more of a social group, a mental health group where men can get together and talk and help each other out,” explained member Rod Tondevold.

When men reach retirement age, it can be difficult for them to remain social and involved in meaningful activities, he added. But the group is open to anyone who is interested in joining.

At its inaugural meeting held Wednesday (Jan. 1o) morning about 12 people turned out, however the long-term location for the meet-ups is still up in the air.

Finding an actual workshop in White Rock or South Surrey is proving to be a challenge, but that is not stopping the men from getting together.

“We’re going to start holding meetings regardless of if we have a shed or not. Weekly meetings are crucial to get men out and keep them involved, whether we have a project or not,” Tondevold said.

“It’s important to have structure so that there is something for men to do to contribute to society.”

With this goal in mind, the Peninsula’s Men’s Shed is interested in working on community projects, as many of the members own tools but do not have their own workshops to build out of, Tondevold explained.

“We want to give back to the community.”

If anyone has a shed to offer the local Men’s Shed group, they can contact Tondevold by email at rod.tondevold@gmail.com

The group is in search for a space that is roughly 30 x 30 feet, and includes features running water, access to a washroom and electrical outlets.

In the interim, weekly meetings are held every Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Aspira Peninsula Retirement Living, at 2088 152 St. and the group is open to new members. The only requirements of membership are being respectful and following the safety rules, which will be laid out for members at their first meeting.
