A new Rotary Club on the Semiahmoo Peninsula has formally received its charter.

The Nature Celebrators BC Rotary Club was officially launched with a Charter Night, Nov. 19 at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club.

Some 200 guests were on hand to congratulate charter president Major General Harwant ‘Harry’ Krishan (Indian Army, retired) and some 23 members of the club, which in addition to other Rotary causes, will have a particular focus on projects to protect and enhance the environment.

Raj Rajogopal, governor of Rotary’s cross-border District 50/50, noted, in introducing Krishan, noted the former soldier’s “passion for the environment” which is manifest in the Pine Hills Eco-Camp for young people, a thriving enterprise he established in the southern Himalayan mountains, and with which he remains deeply involved.

Krishan said in his address that the club will “seek to harness the vast knowledge” that already exists in the scientific community on ways to protect the fragile ecology of the planet.

“Humans are the ones who have caused all the destruction, and it is humans who are going to restore the environment,” he said.

First discussed in April of this year, the new club was technically chartered in July.

Rajogopal formally presented the club charter to Krishan, along with a US $1,500 cheque from the district to cover initial operating expenses.

Among others offering congratulations was the evening’s director of ceremonies Linda Hensman, assistant governor of District 50/50 and a past president of the Semiahmoo Rotary Club, past district governor Sean Horgan and representatives of the other Semiahmoo Peninsula Rotary clubs.
