Wet weather didn't dampen the spirits of local festival goers last weekend as those who braved the rain were treated to games, live entertainment and other family-friendly activities at the 12th annual Ocean Park Day.
"We had a great day despite the weather," co-ordinator Sandy Smith said. "Even starting at 10 a.m. when it was at its worst, there were families that all of a sudden appeared.
"There were people who just really wanted to come out and enjoy and explore our little community."
The June 18 event – which had a theme of 'Fun around every corner; celebrating youth and family' – featured an RCMP tent, student art contest, dog wash, trade show, climbing wall, children's play area and sidewalk entertainment.
Food being offered included candy floss, ice cream, hot dogs and popcorn, Smith noted.
"There was all kinds of taste treats all over the village."
While a few events were cancelled due to the rain – including chalk drawing, a fire truck visit and gymnastics – the main stage carried on with its lineup of entertainers.
Performers included area talents Shelby Noble, the Oh Wells and 13-year-old 2011 Ocean Park Idol winner Alyssa Gutierrez.
"She was amazing," Smith said of Gutierrez, noting some of the performers were younger than those seen in the past. "What we were trying to do was have a little bit for everybody."
The festival coincided with City of Surrey's first annual South Surrey Festival, which was held down the street at Kwomais Point Park.
"It complements, and visitors down to the park make their way up to the Ocean Park village and vice versa," Smith said.
Although this year's turnout was lower due to weather, Smith said the Ocean Park Business Association-run event continues to grow.
"Every year it gets bigger. If the sun had been out, it would've probably been our biggest yet."
