SENIORS SCENE: Feb. 23 seminar will teach seniors how to recognize, avoid fraud

The Kent Street Activity Centre’s Stitch and Chat group has started up again for the new year every Friday 1-3 p.m. Come visit this small, friendly group of crafters and sewers who are meeting weekly to socialize and work on their favorite project. Don’t worry if you don’t have membership with the Kent Street Activity Centre; drop down and try out any activity group, including Stitch and Chat, three times before purchasing membership. • There are still a few spots open in a Garment Sewing 101 workshop on Saturday, Feb. 26, 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Kent Street Activity Centre. Learn about the basic details of garment construction, plus pattern and fabric selection, adjusting patterns for fit, inserting zippers and finishing hems. Please bring a sewing machine in good working order to this class. Participants must be comfortable with their machines and have some previous sewing experience. • Instagram is a fabulous way to share photos and videos from your life with your family and friends. Learn how to install this social media app and then use it to keep connected with others. • Scams targeting seniors have been prevalent in the news lately. Fraudsters are becoming more sophisticated and creative to avoid being caught.

On Wednesday, Feb. 23, 10 a.m. – noon, join White Rock Community Policing in an interactive seminar on how to protect yourself from the current scams, focusing on generic examples of different types of frauds and specific things you can do to reduce the chances of becoming a victim.
