SENIORS SCENE: Meditation, chair yoga classes begin at Kent Street Centre

Activities, classes, seminars fill coming weeks

The Kent Street Activity Centre coffee shop is open and we couldn’t be more excited. Enjoy soups, sandwiches and baked goods Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. A variety of frozen meals will be sold Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• If you enjoy dancing to live bands drop down to the Kent Street Activity Centre on a Wednesday night for a fun evening of dancing and socializing with others. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with dancing from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sept. 21 is the Silver Stars and Sept. 28 is Sweet Water. Call 604-541-2199 for more information.

• Thursday Afternoon Cards at the Centre is looking for more Bid Whist players. This friendly group plays Cribbage, Bid Whist and Canasta and meets every week at 1 p.m. in the auditorium. Not a member of Kent Street Activity Centre? You can drop into any activity group three times as a guest before purchasing membership. Ask for your guest pass on your first visit. • Space is filling up fast “For The Health Of It” – a health and wellness event for seniors in the community on Saturday Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the White Rock Community Centre. This free event includes engaging speakers, a resource fair and the opportunity to try out some active programs such as a Seniors Ability Course, Yoga for Well-Being, Body Works and a Balance Class. • Meditation and Chair Yoga is a wonderful class for older adults and those with physical challenges. The class uses guided meditation as a way to focus the mind, breathing techniques to calm the mind and physical movements to strengthen the body. This class begins today (Sept. 15) at 9:15 a.m. at the Kent Street Activity Centre. Call 604-541-2199 or whiterockcity.ca/register

• Brush up on your Spanish. Beginner and intermediate classes are offered on Monday nights at White Rock Community Centre and a beginner daytime class is scheduled at the Kent Street Activity Centre beginning Sept. 22. Call 604-541-2199 to register.

• On Wednesday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to noon a Fraud Awareness seminar will be offered at the White Rock Community Centre. This interactive seminar will provide information on how to protect yourself from the most current scams as well as focus on generic examples of different types of frauds and specific things you can do to reduce the chance of becoming a victim. This workshop is co-sponsored with White Rock Community Policing, the RCMP and the Semiahmoo Community Safety Society. Call 604-541-2199 to register or online at whiterock city.ca/register
