White Rock’s Allison Voth is breathing easier these days after climbing 739 stairs to the top of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre.
The effort, in support of the BC Lung Association, proved her 34-year-old body is up for the challenge – something Voth has doubted since undergoing lung surgery last November.
“I’m only 34, I’m relatively fit, and I’ve never smoked,” Voth said. “It’s scary when something goes that wrong for no reason. I’ve been afraid to challenge my body since having surgery and climbing 48 flights of stairs was a bit scary, but now I know I can do anything.”
Voth underwent surgery after suffering three spontaneous lung collapses last fall. Doctors have not been able to tell her what caused the problem.
She was among hundreds to participate in the Feb. 27 Stairclimb for Clean Air. She and her RCMP E Division teammates raised more than $1,000 for the cause.
In all, the Stairclimb raised more than $125,000 for the lung association. Post-event fundraising will continue until March 25.
