Nearly two dozen International Baccalaureate students learned a little more about the importance of the local coastline this month, during Shorekeepers training hosted by Friends of Semiahmoo Bay Society.
The weekend “citizen science” workshop – held May 15-17 at the South Surrey Rec Centre and on White Rock’s West Beach – aimed to teach participants how to monitor and map changes in the marine ecosystem.
Noting the Shorekeepers program no longer receives federal funding, FOSBS president Margaret Cuthbert thanked Surrey-White Rock MLA Gordon Hogg for funds ($10,000) received from the Ministry of Community, Sport & Cultural Development.
The money will benefit shoreline-habitat restoration activities, help in the evaluation of eelgrass meadows in eastern Boundary Bay, used to host workshops and public events and provide the Beach Hero marine-interpretive program, Cuthbert said.
