A project to replace an aging school playground in Surrey has gotten $17,000 closer to coming to fruition.
“All playgrounds have a shelf life, and ours has reached its end-of-life,” Hyland Elementary vice-principal Edward Carter said in a Surrey Schools release.
Hyland Elementary in Surrey was the recipient of funds from the sale of Tim Hortons Smile cookies at a few locations, going towards the building of a new playground at the school.
During the fundraising campaign, students visited a participating restaurant location to help decorate some of the Smile cookies.
The campaign, which ran from April 29 to May 5 at seven restaurant locations, has brought in a total of $17,000 to the fundraiser, according to the Surrey school district.
“We’ve been fundraising all year, and the current playground is set to be removed this summer,” Carter said.
The vice-principal added that fundraising for the new structure has been ongoing all year, and the cookie campaign was what they needed to bring them to the next level.
Hyland’s new playground is estimated to cost $230,000.
