SFU student and Black Press columnist Japreet Lehal has been nominated for a national award.

A Simon Fraser University student and Surrey resident is among 13 Canadians shortlisted for a national award recognizing their dedication to democratic participation.

Japreet Lehal, 20 – who writes Peace Arch News’ Youth Voice column monthly – was nominated as an ‘Everyday Political Citizen’ for his work in the community, including his volunteer work at the university, where he is currently the youngest member of the board of directors for the school’s community trust.

Lehal was shortlisted by Akosua Matthews, a Rhodes Scholar and co-founder of the Rhodes Women’s Network, for his commitment to democratic participation.

Fourteen judges from across the country nominated a shortlist for the contest, organized by non-partisan think-tank Samara. On Feb. 3, the panel will select the two top Everyday Political Citizen of 2013 (one adult and one under-18 winner).
