A group of South Surrey high school students have organized multilevel political meet-and-greet slated for this weekend.
Daryl Tang and fellow members of the B.C. Youth Coalition planned the Saturday afternoon event in order to engage youth in politics.
Local politicians from all three levels of government – White Rock Coun. Grant Meyer, MLA Gordon Hogg and MP Russ Hiebert – will all be in attendance to meet youth in the community.
"Youth will meet their politicians and speak to them on a variety of subjects that interest them," a release for the event states. "We feel this is important because there is little communication between youth and their decision makers…"
"It is a frequent misconception that youth are apathetic towards politics," said co-organizer Daryl Tang. "By hosting this event, we hope to provide an opportunity for interested youth to meet political figures and familiarize themselves with Canada's political system."
The event will kick off at 1 p.m. at Centennial Park Hall, 1475 Anderson St., and organizers anticipate a group of 40-50 people to attend.
Those who attend can also take in a youth speaking competition and participate in a youth survey.
