A budding young graphic designer at Surrey’s Tamanawis Secondary topped the field in a flag-creation contest organized by Easter Seals BC/Yukon.

For a Spirit Bear-themed design, Grade 9 student Sanjna Anand won the senior division of a National AccessAbility Week contest (Grades 9-12).

Organizers asked students to design a flag that symbolized the theme of “making B.C. and the Yukon a better place to live through an accessible society.”

Winners in two age categories won $200 each and a real flag of their winning artwork, a pizza party for their class provided by Panago, and their teachers received $750 to use for classroom materials.

Seems like Sanjna put a lot of thought into the design of a winning flag.

“I designed the flag around British Columbia’s provincial symbol, the spirit bear, (which) symbolize courage and strength,” Sanjna explained in their written statement submitted with the artwork.

“By incorporating this symbol into the flag design, the province’s uniquely beautiful and diverse population is represented. The spirit bear’s silhouette captures the captivating northern lights, which can be seen in Yukon.

“A group of seven people, both disabled and not, can be seen walking down the mountain,” Sanjna continued. “Gazing up at the starry sky. The pink string linking their hearts represents the phrase ‘Our hearts beat as one.’ This phrase represents the unity and love that unify them despite their differences. They cherish every moment of life and appreciate the diversity that each individual brings to the group.

“On the flag’s border, a steller’s jay, British Columbia’s provincial bird, representing bold and fearless energy, rests on a branch. Finally, my flag’s colour theme is purple which symbolizes wisdom, peace and pride.”

Winner of the Grades 6-8 contest was Mudita S. (no last name given), a student at Gordon Head Middle School in Victoria.
