There’s only supposed to be one recipient of the ‘The Mary Hartwell Scholarship’ program administered by the White Rock Farmers’ Market Society, but this year, they made an exception.
As a result, on Sunday at 10:00 a.m., at the market venue entrance at Russell Avenue and Johnston Road, three people will be honored.
Each will receive a certificate and an award of $2,500 payable towards post secondary education costs in food/nutrition and/or sustainable agriculture.
The Mary Hartwell scholars for 2012 are Samantha Smith, Lucy Brain and Grace Augustinowicz.
A statement issued by the society explains the applicants “displayed such exceptional qualities that David Hawkins, the husband of the late Mary Hartwell, was prompted to add the extra funds which allowed the society to award not one but three scholarships for 2012.”
