Six-year-old Gurjot Gill has his turban tied at a turban competition in Newton Sunday.

More than 5,000 people attended the ninth annual Turban (Dastar) Competition in Surrey this week.

The goal of the free event – held Sunday from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Bombay Banquet Hall  in Newton – was to promote and create positive awareness of the turban.

In addition to watching competitors take the stage, attendants enjoyed musical performances, appetizers, tea and a children’s play area that included a drawing contest, face painting and balloon twister.

Organizers say the competition plays a crucial role in raising awareness about what the turban symbolizes.
