White Rock’s new waterfront night market will be open this summer, but only on Friday nights once a month.

The night market will bring live music, food trucks, artisan products, an art walk and buskers to Memorial Park and the West Beach promenade just west of the pier.

An announcement from the Greater Vancouver Food Truck Festival, organizers of the event in co-ordination with city staff, has pin-pointed five dates for the market.

It will be open May 31, June 28, July 26 and Aug. 30 (3 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and Sept. 27 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Given final endorsement by council on March 11, the market is being limited to a once-per-month event this year due to tight organizational schedules.

It will be reviewed by city staff at the end of the season to gauge viability and possible expansion.

The market had received initial approval from council on Dec. 11, and latterly received endorsement from the White Rock BIA board, on Feb. 27 for a one-year trial.

A corporate report from city recreation and culture director John Woolgar and cultural development manager Rebecca Forrest noted the night market “will add to and compliment White Rock’s diverse events and further animate the waterfront.

They added draw visitors to the waterfront that will build tourism, support local businesses, and create opportunities for local artisans, musicians, entertainers, and food cart operators.
