The Rotary Club of White Rock’s popular book sale is moving into its fifth decade, with a new event scheduled for Friday, April 14 at the Peace Arch Curling Club, 1475 Anderson St. (in Centennial Park).

Doors open at 10 a.m. sharp and close at 6 p.m. for the sale, which will continue to Tuesday, April 18.

Book sale manager Keith Becker said close to 35,000 books will be on sale in the latest edition of the event, first launched in 1982 – the same year that Canada repatriated its Constitution – and advertised as ‘the biggest book sale west of Winnipeg.’

“While our prices have remained low, other prices did not,” noted club publicist George Garrett. “Bread, milk and gas cost a lot more now but the Rotary Book Sale is still great value.”

Prices are $3 per book on Friday and Saturday (opening hours 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), going down to $2 per book Sunday and Monday (from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

On closing day (Tuesday, April 18, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) bargain hunters will be able to buy a bag of books for $10.

Over the years, over $1.5 million raised by White Rock Rotary has been used for community projects such as providing state-of-the-art playgrounds at both White Rock Elementary Schools.

Funds have also gone back into the community recently for rescue equipment for White Rock Fire Rescue and for a portable library at a seniors’ residence.

The club also supports Rec-for-Kids (free bicycles), has contributed to Peace Arch Hospital and most recently provided free hot lunches during the pandemic with the ‘Feed My City’ program.”

For those already inundated with books, the sale also offers opportunity to downsize the current collection, Becker added.

“Now is a good opportunity to donate books that are ready for a new home and make room for new books in your library,” he said.

Donations can be made at the Rotary Field House until April 12, then at the Peace Arch Curling Club – from April 13 to April 18 – from 10 a.m to 4 p.m. each day.
