A White Rock teen didn’t let a knee injury prevent her from reaching her goals last month.
Miss World Canada delegate Lisa Xie sprained her knee two days before the May 11 gala, but was determined to take the stage – six-inch heels and all.
“I was able to pull through the gala. I took a lot of medication and wore a knee brace. It was really challenging,” she said.
“That evening before going on stage, I was told I should just wear flats and pull through. But I actually got to wear my six-inch heels that I had been practising in.
“I believe that the judges must have seen something in me that was different than the other delegates. So for my knee, it showed my courage and showed that even if you’re young and you don’t have the perfect walk, you’re still able to achieve what you want.”
Xie, 18, placed in the top 16 out of 41 delegates across Canada in the annual Miss World Canada competition. She was also the youngest national delegate in the pageant, which ended on May 11, and brought home the first-place medal for the Beauty With A Purpose video competition.
Xie filmed her video on White Rock beach in order to show off her community and share it on the national and world stage, while focusing on her volunteer work. Now, with her Miss World Canada journey at an end, Xie is planning to go to post-secondary, but she said the pageant made a lasting impression.
“I’ve never met a group of girls who were so caring. This is not a typical pageant. All the girls were so passionate about the things they support,” she said.
