Acclaimed Italian classical guitarist Aniello Desiderio is coming to Surrey to perform “one of the most miraculous, charming and lyrical compositions of the 20th century” with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

The VSO’s Surrey Nights series concert is Sunday, March 3, at Bell Performing Arts Centre, starting at 7 p.m.

Schubert’s “Ninth Symphony,” nicknamed “The Great,” is a featured composition that evening, along with Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,” with Desiderio as soloist.

Ahead of the concert, the guitarist will lead a masterclass in Pyatt Hall in Vancouver on Thursday, Feb 29, 5 p.m., with livestream available on the VSO School of Music website,

Tickets for the VSO’s Surrey concert are available on, where a bio says Desiderio performed in public for the first time at age eight.

Since then he’s performed regularly as a recitalist in North and South Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa, at Carnegie Hall, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, Palau de La Musica, Mozarteum, Koelner Philarmonie and other famous theatres.

Also this week, the VSO will perform with comedian/siren siren Meow Meow at Vancouver’s Orpheum Theatre, 8 p.m. Saturday, March 2. David Bowie raved about the performance artist, who will join the orchestra for a “glorious evening of subversive and sublime entertainment.”
