KPU students to meet the maestro

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra conductor Bramwell Tovey to visit Surrey campus on Jan. 31.

How would you like to spend a day with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO)?

Grammy and Juno award-winning musician, composer and conductor Bramwell Tovey will be giving a talk at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) on Jan. 31.

As the director and artistic adviser of the VSO School of Music, Tovey will guide participants through a typical day at the VSO and even give a peek behind the inner workings of the world-renowned orchestra and how they perform their music.

This special Meet the Maestro event is part of the Third Age of Learning (TALK) series that offers those 50 years and older an opportunity to experience creative and stimulating educational experiences. (The event is open to all ages).

“I’m delighted to be back at KPU taking part in an educational series devoted to life-long learning,” said Tovey in a media release. “Music teaches us to think bigger and to realize the possibilities within ourselves much like most educational pursuits. I cannot wait to share some inspiring stories, some funny stories, and of course, music.”

A renowned composer, Tovey won a 2003 Juno Award for Requiem for a Charred Skull. Commissions include the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Toronto Symphony and Calgary Opera, which premiered his first full length opera The Inventor in 2011. Tovey has also appeared as piano soloist with major orchestras including the Royal Philharmonic.

An Honorary Officer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music (UK) and the Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto), Tovey holds honorary degrees from several universities, including Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

To register for this event and for a full schedule of TALK events, visit kpu.ca/talk. Registration deadline is Jan. 26.

The event runs from noon to 2  p.m. and is $20 for the public, $15 for TALK members and KPU staff, and free for KPU students.
