The Semiahmoo Potters are hoping that gift-buyers will want to take advantage of their one-week-before Mother’s Day spring pottery sale this weekend.

The free admission event is back at the Turnbull Gallery at the South Surrey Recreation and Art’s Centre (14601 20 Ave.) Friday, April 29, noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday, April 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Over 30 local potters’ decorative and functional ceramics will be featured in the upcoming show.

With a focus on a home and garden, that includes everything from tiny ceramic critters and whimsical Raku pieces to large practical platters and pots.

“Sharing our ceramic arts by ‘connecting communities with clay’ is always a joy,” the society’s Diane Petersen said, adding that members are looking forward to meeting the public under less rigorous COVID 19 restrictions.

“The facility no longer requires vaccination checks,” she said.

“Visitors may choose to wear masks, however, and hand sanitizing will be available, so customers can safely examine pottery.”

Another incentive for sales, she points out, is is the society’s policy of offering supporters the opportunity to donate to a social cause.

At the 2021 Christmas Sale shoppers contributed over $1,000 to B.C. flood victims via the Red Cross; for the upcoming show the Semiahmoo Potters will offer two ways for visitors to donate to Ukraine war relief.

A special table will display pieces influenced by Ukrainian culture and colours, Petersen said, with 100 per cent of the sale price of each pot going to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Patrons can also donate cash or add an amount to their purchase total at the event’s cashier tables, she added.
