Award-winning dancer Humuza Bazira (aka Humuzza) will rep Surrey in the next season of “Canada’s Got Talent,” starting Tuesday, March 19.

A hip-hop dancer and “popper,” he’s among 116 acts in the running to win $1 million on the Citytv show, judged by Howie Mandel, Lilly Singh, Trish Stratus and Kardinal Offishall.

The long list of contestants includes Humuzza and 12 other B.C.-based acts. Among them are Langley singer/musician Tera Drum, Vernon’s Daniel Powter (singer of the 2005 hit “Bad Day”), Victoria comedian Maninder Waraich, Vancouver vocal group Mom Pop and others listed on the show’s website.

The “Million Dollar Season” promises “wild and weird acts, world-record breaking stunts and several contestants who are pursuing their dreams abroad but now coming home to compete on the Canadian stage.”

Humuzza’s bio says the 20-year-old “grew up watching talent shows like CGT (Canada’s Got Talent)” and hopes to surprise judges this season.

Last April he was a judge of Surrey Slam Jam’s dance battle after dancing his way to a top-four finish at the Red Bull Dance Your Style contest in South Africa a few months earlier, in December 2022. Humuzza represented Canada at the contest, which involved dozens of other dancers from 30 countries.

In Johannesburg, the Sullivan Heights grad wore a Hockey Canada jersey during his performance in front of a sold-out crowd at the Montecasino entertainment venue.

The previous summer, Humuzza won a Vancouver qualifier and then the national title in Toronto for the right to compete in the Red Bull-sponsored world final.

He’s been dancing for close to seven years now, starting at Sullivan Heights.

“I started out with a beginner class at my school and from there I joined the school hip-hop team and also a team outside of school,” Humuzza told the Now-Leader in August 2022. “I joined a team called Megabots, which I’m still on right now. I’ve done various competitions and battles.”
