It was win-win-win for Cloverdale over the weekend.
The Cloverdale Community Football Association (CCFA) captured three titles at the BC Provincial Football Association’s flag football championships. The provincial tourney was held at South Surrey Athletic Park, with games running June 7-9.
The CCFA sent several teams with their U10 Orange team, their U12 Black team, and their U16 Black team all winning gold.
“We won three divisional spring flag provincial championships over the weekend in the provincial finals,” noted Yeera Sami, president of CCFA. “Our U16 Black team will now represent B.C. in the national finals in Brantford, Ont., in August.”
Sami said his U8 Black team also did very well. The squad narrowly lost in their provincial championship final game, being edged out by only five points.
Sami noted that over three days of football, 189 teams with more than 2,000 players, guided by more than 400 coaches, competed in six divisions: U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U19.
“It was an amazing weekend of football,” Sami added. “The teams had to play an average of eight games to reach the finals.”
He said despite the sunny and hot weather, his teams competed at the highest level, played with pride, and never gave up.
“I am very proud of all our teams that participated,” he added. “(Our) coaches were on top of their game.”
Cloverdale’s U10 Orange team also completed a perfect season. The squad went into provincials with a unblemished 19-0 record. They also went undefeated throughout the year-end tournament, winning eight games in a row to finish the season a perfect 27-0.
Sami said he’s looking forward to seeing how the CCFA U16 squad does at the national championship finals in Ontario at the end of summer.
Even without the three provincial championship wins, it was a successful year for the CCFA. Cloverdale sent 13 teams from U8-U19 to the finals. Many of those teams had exceptional seasons. Most finished at or near the top of their respective division standings after several weeks of football and five Vancouver Mainland Football League (VMFL) jamborees.
