Spring into South Surrey rec

March was an active and event-filled month with great success. Each event was well-attended, from the Focus on Seniors Forum that had more than 100 registrants, to the Healthy Starts Breakfast that proved to be a winner for all ages with our local Choices market providing wonderful organic breakfast options to the community.

Our first-ever ‘Kids Stuff Swap’ and book fair was a sellout and well-received by the community. Families, and kids spent an afternoon searching for their favourite treasures or selling them and then heading to the bouncy castle, book fair and craft centre to finish out their day.

This season, the fitness classes Monday through Friday will start at 8 a.m. with a 15-minute break between classes to guarantee better flow and accuracy for the start and end times. All of the favourite classes will still be available, along with additional Core Conditioning and Pilates classes mid-morning.

Do you suffer with arthritis and love to garden? On April 14, the Arthritis Society is offering a free two-hour talk, Gardening with Arthritis. This program is designed to help you enjoy gardening without putting additional stress on your joints. Later in the month, a six-session course, Arthritis Self Management, will be offered for just $25. You will learn through lectures, discussion and brainstorming the skills to help you better manage your arthritis.

Wondering about the next adventure with Enjoy Tours and Travel? On April 13, you could visit the Britannia Mine Museum, featuring the underground adventure tour. Highlights of the tour include the underground train, new exhibits, galleries, a visit into the Historic Mill building, gold-panning pavilion and a delicious lunch on the Squamish River at the popular Watershed Grill. The day also includes the screening of the film, In the Shadow of the Chief, in a comfortable and intimate 36-seat theatre. The course number for this trip is 4242294, and if you are interested in this or any other bus trips contact our registration line at 604-501-5100.

Our oil painting and watercolour classes are returning this season with our original instructor. Join Stan and begin your journey into the world of art beginning April 13.

The Foot Care clinic will take place April 15 next month, so if you are planning your follow-up appointment or you need to have an assessment, call the recreation centre at 604-592-6970.

If you enjoy line dancing, join Peggy Tompson and our line dancers for their annual ‘Spring Fling” hoedown April 30. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun.

The dancing begins at 12:30 p.m. and does not finish until 4:30 p.m.

The cost, $17, includes a delicious lunch and refreshments. Register now with course number 4246309.

The Annual Steve Silverton South Surrey 55+ Badminton Tournament takes place April 21 starting at 8 a.m. The event hosts 100 players enjoying a recreational tournament and social lunch.

Everyone is a winner at this tournament and everyone takes home a prize. Drop by to watch some amazing seniors in their preferred environment, the badminton courts. Stay happy with healthy activities and see you at the rec center.

Terri Focker, a community service assistant for the City of Surrey, writes monthly on seniors activities.
