Delta Mayor George Harvie has been acclaimed for a second term as chair of Metro Vancouver’s board of directors.

In his role, Harvie — alongside Anmore Mayor John McEwen, who was acclaimed for a second term as vice-chair of the board — will also oversee the Greater Vancouver Sewerage & Drainage District, Greater Vancouver Water District, and Metro Vancouver Housing Corporation boards.

Both are elected for a one-year term.

“I want to thank my colleagues for re-electing me as Chair of Metro Vancouver. Together we have achieved significant accomplishments for our growing region. I am honoured by your confidence [and] look forward to continuing working together to ensure strong and sustainable communities,” Harvie said on X (formerly Twitter).

In the coming weeks, Harvie will determine Metro’s standing committees for the coming term and their resptive memberships. Each committee will then consider priorities, policies and activities for the district and make recommendations to the board.

Metro Vancouver provides core regional services to more than 2.8 million residents in 21 municipalities as well as Tsawwassen First Nation and Electoral Area A, including water, sewers and wastewater treatment, and solid waste management. It also regulates air quality, plans for urban growth, manages a regional parks system, provides affordable housing and serves as a regional federation.

The regional district is governed by a 41-person board of directors made up of elected officials from each member jurisdiction who meet once a month.

Directors are appointed by their respective councils, except for Electoral Area A, where the director is elected directly by residents. The number of directors from each member jurisdiction reflects its population, and each director is allocated one vote for every 20,000 people, up to a maximum of five votes.
