How often should you schedule professional maintenance for your residential HVAC system?

“We generally recommend that you schedule professional maintenance at least once a year,” Malekpour says. “Annual maintenance should include a comprehensive inspection, cleaning, and servicing of your HVAC equipment by a qualified technician. A regular maintenance schedule will keep your HVAC system operating efficiently and reduce the risk of breakdowns, helping to extend it’s lifespan.”

What regular maintenance can homeowners do to improve HVAC performance and longevity?

“While regular professional maintenance is essential, there are a few things homeowners can and should do, to help keep their HVAC systems running smoothly,” Malekpour says.

  • Change or clean air filters: This should be done every one to three months, depending on the type of filter and usage. Clean filters promote good indoor air quality and prevent strain on the system.
  • Keep outdoor units clean: Ensure outdoor units can maintain proper airflow and heat exchange by clearing away debris, leaves and other obstructions.
  • Keep vents and registers clear: Just like outdoor units, indoor vents and registers need to maintain proper air circulation to work. Make sure furniture, carpets and other objects are not covering them.
  • Check and clean condensate drain line: Ensure that the condensate drain line is clear of blockages to prevent water damage and system malfunctions.

4 ways to improve your HVAC system’s energy efficiency

  • Upgrade to energy-efficient equipment: Replacing older HVAC equipment with energy-efficient models that meet ENERGY STAR® standards is the easiest way to improve energy efficiency. While upgrading requires a larger investment upfront, it will result in lower bills long term.
  • Use programmable thermostats: Smart or programmable thermostats are not only convenient but can help reduce your energy consumption as well, by optimizing temperatures based on your schedule and preferences.
  • Seal ductwork: Leaky ducts can result in significant energy losses. Seal any leaks in the ductwork to ensure efficient airflow, minimizing energy waste.
  • Proper insulation: Improve your home’s insulation and regularly check and replace weather-striping on doors and windows to reduce heat transfer. This keeps conditioned air inside, minimizing the workload on your HVAC system.
