A man accused of killing his wife during a brazen daytime attack at her workplace last summer has been ordered to stand trial in B.C. Supreme Court.
Manmeet Singh, 27, was charged with first-degree murder last July after allegedly stabbing 24-year-old Ravinder Kaur Bhangu to death.
His trial was ordered after a three-day preliminary hearing in Surrey Provincial Court last week.
Police were called to the Sach Di Awaaz Newspaper office near 128 Street and 82 Avenue on the morning of July 28, 2011. Witnesses at the time reported seeing a man enter the office armed with at least one knife.
Singh was arrested at the scene, charged the same day and has been in custody since. He is also charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon in relation to injuries suffered by a man who attempted to intervene in the deadly attack.
Bhangu and Singh had been married since 2009, but friends said the couple had separated a few months before the murder. The victim's parents and immediate family live in India.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said there was no indication the attack had anything to do with the newspaper where Bhangu worked as an administrative assistant. She was also a Giddha (folk dance) instructor at a local Punjabi arts club.
Singh's next court date is May 3 in New Westminster Supreme Court.
