Canada Day got off to a brisk start in White Rock with the annual July 1 10K run for adults and 5K run/walk for kids on East Beach.

East Beach was also the site of the kid's zone, with kite flying, face painting, balloon twisting and a children's sandcastle event, among other events.

On West Beach, there were artisan and vendor displays, the White Rock Museum & Archives open house and live acts that included a tribute to Elvis and Marilyn Monroe.

The day started out cloudy, but cleared by early afternoon.

The evening fireworks display drew an estimated crowd of 10,000 to the beaches and the pier.

For the whole day, organizers said overall attendance appeared to be up slightly from the previous year, between 15,000 to 20,000 people.

There were no reports of police incidents.
