It was a busy holiday weekend for the Chilliwack Search and Rescue team.
The search and rescue team was called in on Sunday (May 19) from a satellite device (Zoleo) activated by a hiker who had strayed off course on Mount Webb in the Chilliwack River Valley, before losing his footing and sliding 50 feet over a cliff above Radium Lake.
The search and rescue team was luckily finishing up another call on Vedder Mountain where they had responded to a group of hikers who had lost their way. The hikers were found safe and sound, before a team was sent up by helicopter to locate the stranded hiker on Mount Webb.
The search and rescue team was able to locate the man who was extracted by helicopter with just enough daylight to spare. He was then turned over to paramedics where he was treated for hypothermia and a fractured ankle before a ground team was sent up to help another member of the party.
With outdoor season fast approaching, hikers – both experienced and inexperienced – are reminded to prepare before venturing out on any expeditions. This can include things like planning your trip according to your level of skill, consulting reputable sources like guidebooks or databases and always letting others know where you are when you plan a trip.
Hikers are reminded to always pack the essentials on any trips, and in case of an emergency, never hesitate to call for help.
