Dozens of people gathered at a candlelight vigil in Holland Park in Surrey Wednesday night in honour of the young woman who died in a Singapore hospital on Saturday after being gang-raped and beaten on a Delhi bus Dec. 16.
The Surrey group is one of many worldwide demanding better treatment for women in India, where protestors also continue to rally in the streets to draw attention to the denigration of females and the apparent lax attitude of police.
The 23-year-old victim and the young man she was with were brutally attacked and then stripped and thrown off the bus. The woman suffered severe organ damage from a metal rod that was inserted into her body.
Five men have been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal assault, and a sixth charge is pending.
A vigil was also held Sunday at Surrey's Laxmi Narayan Hindu temple and another has been organized by Global Girl Power for Sunday (Jan. 6) in Bear Creek Park, 13750 88 Ave. from 3-5 p.m.
