An "equipment failure" is to blame for a power failure that threw part of South Surrey into gridlock on Tuesday afternoon.

Crews were in the 15700-block of 24 Avenue from about 3:30 p.m., working to repair what one passerby said was a blown transformer.

As a result, eastbound traffic on 24 Avenue was being blocked and re-routed, causing significant delays.

According to BC Hydro, more than 2,200 homes and businesses were affected, and power was to be restored by 6:30 p.m.
