Nearby homes were evacuated Friday evening following a report of possible explosives in a car at the Douglas border crossing.

Area homes were evacuated and the Douglas/Peace Arch border crossing closed to traffic in both directions Friday evening due to a security incident.

Surrey RCMP was called to assist at the border around 6 p.m., after a traveller advised border officers of possible explosives in his vehicle.

A search of the vehicle determined there were no explosives.

One man was apprehended at the scene under the Mental Health Act.

Border traffic was diverted to the Pacific Highway crossing at 176 Street while the issue was dealt with.

The crossing re-opened by 10:30 p.m. Friday.
