A man is in custody after heallegedly assaulted passengers on a SkyTrain and then “attempted to slash” one of the officers with a knife in Burnaby.
Just after midnight on Monday (April 10), Metro Vancouver Transit Police were called after several reports of a man assaulting passengers on an eastbound Millenium Line SkyTrain, according to media relations officer Const. Amanda Steed.
Steed said the man allegedly “aggressively approached a man whom he didn’t know, swore at him, and shoved him with both hands.” The suspect approached a second man, also shoving him, and “continued to act erratic, waving his arms and yelling.”
The two victims got off the train at Sperling Station where they called 911, while the suspect stayed on the train.
She said officers stopped the train at Lougheed Station and found the suspect on board, but as officers attempted to speak with the man he allegedly “struck one of them in the face and fled on foot” toward the intersection of Austin Road and Grande Promenade, just west of North Road.
Police chased the suspect on foot and caught up with him at the intersection.
Steed said the suspect allegedly “produced a knife, stated that he would kill the officer, and slashed at her with the knife, ripping her jacket.”
Police then used a conducted energy weapon that was “ineffective.” Steed added one shot was fired by police, “which did not strike the suspect.” The suspect was taken into custody after more officers arrived.
Steed said neither the officer nor the suspect had serious physical injuries.
Kyle Evan Grant, of no fixed address, faces several charges including assaulting a police officer, uttering threats, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and willful obstruction.
Grant, 37, remains in police custody, awaiting a psychological assessment before answering to his criminal charges.
