UPDATE: Chilliwack RCMP confirm driver, now cooperating, is ‘not involved’ in man’s death

UPDATE:

RCMP advised media on Feb. 28 that the driver of the truck has come forward, and is cooperating with the investigation.

“The Chilliwack RCMP would like to thank the public for their assistance,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener of the Chilliwack RCMP. “The driver of the red truck has come forward and is cooperating fully with police. As stated in the initial media release, the driver of the red truck is a witness to this incident and not involved in the male’s death.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Chilliwack RCMP are looking for the driver of a red truck who may have some information on a man’s death.

The victim, who was known to police, was found dead in a drainage ditch on Chilliwack Central Road between Prest Road and Broadway Street on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 17.

A red truck was seen driving through the area along Chilliwack Central Road the day before, between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Feb. 16, and now police are asking for the public’s help in identifying the driver.

“We are treating the driver as a witness at this time and are urging them or the owner of the vehicle to come forward to assist us in advancing the investigation,” said Cpl. Carmen Kiener with the Chilliwack RCMP. “We are also seeking witnesses who may have seen the male walking along Chilliwack Central Road between Broadway Street and Prest Road during that time frame. The deceased male was wearing a black jacket, grey pants, and carrying a beige duffle bag.”

Witnesses reported on social media that they saw several vehicles in a field to the north of Chilliwack Central Road, including an RCMP vehicle, a pickup truck and a tow truck.

The Chilliwack RCMP general investigation support team has been working closely with the BC Coroners Service to identify the deceased man and conduct an investigation to determine the cause of death.

He has been identified and his name is not being released to the public at this time.
