Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner is expected to announce support of the train relocation.

A recent push by the City of White Rock to pressure Transport Canada to deal with rail-safety concerns will be the focus of a media event in Crescent Beach this morning (Tuesday).

According to a news release, Surrey Coun. Linda Hepner and council are going to announce support of a directive proposed by Mayor Wayne Baldwin last week, to have staff get the ball rolling on the process to move the tracks off of the waterfront.

Organizers are hoping as many people as possible will turn out for the 10 a.m. event, dubbed Let's Move the Tracks, at the Beecher Street rail crossing.

"We need to show massive support and solidarity for this very important step," the release states.

Baldwin said last week that he believes trains could be re-routed within five years off of the tracks that run through the Peninsula.

The idea was raised last summer, but side-tracked by safety orders from Transport Canada that were triggered by the death of a jogger on East Beach tracks.

Baldwin said Port Metro Vancouver's recent approval of a coal-transfer facility proposed by Fraser Surrey Docks spurred him to bring the issue back to the forefront.
