In Surrey’s growing Sullivan neighbourhood, construction crews are busy digging up sections of 148 Street as part of a $7.5-million project.
The roadwork, between 58 and 64 avenues, should be completed by the end of 2024, months ahead of the new Snokomish Elementary School opening next spring (2025).
The 27-classroom, three-storey school is being built for 655 students at the corner of 58B Avenue, where motorists had to drive around work crews Wednesday afternoon (April 17).
TRAFFIC ALERT: $7.5M work on this Surrey street will continue all year, before a new school opens in the neighbourhood.

The roadwork aims to “enhance the neighbourhood and increase road safety,” according to a post on surrey.ca, with paths for walking and cycling, new traffic signal at 60 Avenue, streetlights, road paving and resurfacing of the intersection of 64 Avenue and 148 Street. Watermain and storm sewer upgrades are also being done.
“The City will need to use road allowance to make space for the multi-use paths for cycling and walking and to provide parking where possible,” the city’s website notes.
“If your property has any encroachments (e.g. a gate/hedge) in the road allowance, please remove them before construction starts. This will allow the project to be completed in a timely manner.”
In a news release, Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke said the City of Surrey’s Strategic Transportation Short-Term Projects plan “underscores the importance of upgrading the 148 Street corridor.”
