TransLlink handed out over 6,000 fewer fare infraction tickets in 2016 compared to 2015.
The transit agency issued 25,849 tickets in 2016 across SkyTrain, Canada Line, bus, West Coast Express and shuttle buses. SkyTrain users were the worst offenders with 19,286 tickets issued, Canada Line users received 4,287 tickets, bus users received 2,244, West Coast Express users received 31 and shuttle bus users received just one ticket.
The first three months of 2016 were the highest with with an average of 3,016 tickets each month. TransLink believes that is because Compass Card fare gates at SkyTrain and Canada Line stations fully closed in April and made sneaking through without a fare much more difficult. Starting in April, fare infractions only topped 2,000 once in July.
TransLink spokesperson Jill Drews said that ridership climbed to an all-time high in 2016.
“There were 384.83 million boardings last year, a 4.5% increase from 2015’s total,” said Drews.
