One of two men charged following an attack last year on a White Rock city councillor outside of his Marine Drive pub has been set for trial.

A date of Aug. 23 for the proceedings involving Andrew Ronald Bader was set by his lawyer during a Jan. 31 appearance in Surrey Provincial Court.

Bader and David Hugh Watson were both charged with assault causing bodily harm following an incident on March 20 of last year.

That's the date that Bill Lawrence – a city councillor and former co-owner of the now-closed Sandpiper Pub – was assaulted while working as a host at the front door.

Lawrence said he was put in a headlock, punched in the ribs and targeted repeatedly with "the N-word."

Charges were sworn in late June.

Watson's lawyer, Craig Sicotte, said Friday that a trial date has not been set for his client. If it proceeds to trial, it's possible the proceedings could be joined with Bader's, he said.

Watson is due back in court on Feb. 21.
